Drain jetting is a professional method used to clear blockages, debris, grease, silt and build-up from drainage pipes. It uses high-pressure water to clean through the pipework and restore better flow through the drainage system.
Drain Division provides drain jetting services for domestic and commercial properties. Our engineers can use specialist jetting equipment to clear blocked drains, outside drains, gullies, pipework and drainage runs where a standard clearance method may not be enough.
Drain jetting is often used as part of blocked drain services, emergency drain unblocking and wider drainage maintenance.
When Drain Jetting May Be Needed
Drain jetting may be suitable if you are dealing with:
Jetting can be an effective way to clear material from inside the pipework, but recurring problems may still need further investigation.
Drain jetting is commonly used when material has built up inside the drainage system and needs to be broken down or washed through. It can be particularly useful where the blockage is caused by soft material, silt or residue rather than a single solid object.
Drain jetting can help clear:
If the drain keeps blocking after jetting, there may be an underlying issue such as root ingress, cracked pipework, displaced joints or a collapsed section. A CCTV drain survey can help identify the cause.
High-pressure drain jetting uses a controlled jet of water to break down and move material inside the pipework. The equipment and approach used will depend on the type of blockage, the pipe size, the access points available and the condition of the drainage system.
The drain jetting process may include:
Drain jetting is often used for blocked outside drains, blocked sinks and general drainage blockages. If damaged pipework is found, Drain Division can advise on drain repairs or drain relining where appropriate.
Drain jetting is often part of a wider drainage service, especially when a blockage is severe, recurring or linked to debris inside the pipework.

Is drain jetting better than rodding?
It depends on the blockage. Drain rods can sometimes shift a simple obstruction, but jetting is often more suitable where grease, silt, debris or general build-up needs to be cleared through the pipework. If the drain blocks repeatedly after basic clearance, jetting or a CCTV inspection may be more appropriate.
Can drain jetting damage old pipework?
Drain jetting needs to be used correctly and with the condition of the pipework in mind. If a drain is already cracked, brittle, collapsed or badly displaced, aggressive jetting may not be suitable. In those cases, a CCTV drain survey may be recommended before deciding on the safest clearance or repair method.
Will drain jetting remove tree roots permanently?
Drain jetting can help clear root-related obstructions in some situations, but it does not repair the point where roots entered the pipe. If roots have found a crack, joint or damaged section, they can grow back unless the defect is repaired.
Why has my drain blocked again after being jetted?
A drain can block again after jetting if there is an underlying defect, heavy grease use, repeated flushing of wipes or sanitary products, root ingress, poor pipe alignment or a collapsed section of drain. Recurring blockages usually need further investigation rather than repeated clearance alone.
Do I need drain jetting if the drain has only blocked once?
Not always. A one-off blockage may be cleared without full jetting, depending on the cause and location. Drain jetting is more likely to be useful where the blockage is stubborn, the pipework is heavily fouled, an outside drain is full of silt, or the same drain has blocked before.
Is drain jetting suitable for blocked outside drains?
Yes. Drain jetting is often suitable for blocked outside drains because external gullies and drainage runs commonly collect silt, mud, leaves, debris and grease. If an outside drain is overflowing or water is pooling near the property, the blockage should be checked properly.
Should I use chemicals before booking drain jetting?
Chemical drain cleaners are not always suitable and may not reach the actual blockage if the problem is further along the drainage run. If the drain is severely blocked, overflowing or repeatedly backing up, it is better to get the drainage system assessed properly.
