How Much Does It Cost to Unblock a Toilet?

The cost of unblocking a toilet can vary depending on whether the blockage is inside the toilet itself, in the waste pipe, in the soil stack or further along the drainage system. A simple toilet blockage is very different from a problem where wastewater is backing up, several fixtures are affected, or the outside drains are also overflowing.

Drain Division provides professional blocked toilet services for domestic and commercial properties. We can help assess whether the issue is local to the toilet or connected to wider blocked drain problems.

What Affects Blocked Toilet Prices?

Blocked toilet costs can vary depending on:

  • Whether only one toilet is affected or several drains are slow or backing up
  • Whether water is rising in the pan or wastewater is already overflowing
  • Whether the blockage is caused by tissue, wipes, sanitary products, nappies or a foreign object
  • Whether the toilet can be cleared without removing the pan
  • Whether the blockage is in the toilet trap, waste pipe, soil stack or wider drainage run
  • Whether access is available through an inspection chamber or outside drain
  • Whether drain jetting is needed rather than simple toilet clearance
  • Whether the same toilet or drain has blocked before

A toilet that has blocked once may only need straightforward clearance. If the same toilet keeps blocking, or if sinks, baths, showers or outside drains are also affected, the issue may be further along the drainage system.

When the Cost May Increase

The cost may be higher if the blockage is severe, if the toilet pan needs to be removed, if the blockage has travelled further into the drainage system, or if wastewater is backing up and the issue needs urgent attention. A blocked toilet affecting a commercial premises, rental property or only usable bathroom may also need faster support.

If the toilet blockage is linked to a wider drainage issue, the next step may involve emergency drain unblocking, CCTV drain survey work, root ingress removal or drain repairs where damaged pipework is found.

Because every blockage is different, Drain Division does not use this page to give one fixed price for every blocked toilet. For a clearer idea of likely cost, contact us with details of what is happening, whether the water level is rising, whether other drains are affected and whether the toilet has blocked before.

Blocked Toilet Cost FAQs

Why can unblocking a toilet cost money even if it is a quick job?

A quick toilet clearance still involves the engineer attending the property, bringing the right tools, assessing the blockage and dealing with a problem that can become unpleasant or damaging if handled incorrectly. The time on site is only one part of the cost.

Is it cheaper if only one toilet is blocked?

It can be more straightforward if only one toilet is affected, but it still depends on the cause. A simple pan blockage may be easier to clear than a foreign object, compacted wipes, a problem in the soil pipe or a blockage further along the drain.

Does a blocked toilet mean the main drain is blocked?

Not always. If only one toilet is affected, the blockage may be local to that toilet. If several toilets, sinks, baths, showers or outside drains are slow, gurgling or backing up, the problem may be in the wider drainage system.

Can I try to unblock the toilet myself first?

For a minor blockage, some people try a plunger first. However, if the water level is rising, wastewater is backing up, the toilet is the only usable one in the property, or the blockage keeps returning, professional help is usually the safer option.

Could the toilet need to be removed to clear the blockage?

Sometimes. If a foreign object is trapped, if the blockage cannot be reached safely, or if the obstruction is stuck in the pan or connection, removing the toilet may be needed. This can make the job more involved than a standard clearance.

Is drain jetting needed for a blocked toilet?

Not always. A local toilet blockage may not need jetting. Drain jetting may be needed if the blockage is further into the drainage system, if outside drains are affected, or if there is heavy waste, grease, silt or debris in the pipework.

Will I need a CCTV drain survey for a blocked toilet?

A CCTV drain survey is not usually needed for every blocked toilet. It may be recommended if the toilet keeps blocking, if more than one drain is affected, or if there are signs of root ingress, damaged pipework or a collapsed drain.

Should I still pay if the toilet cannot be unblocked on the first visit?

This depends on what was agreed before the work started. Sometimes an attempted clearance reveals that the issue is not a simple toilet blockage but a deeper drainage problem. It is sensible to ask what happens if the blockage cannot be cleared straight away.

Should I call the water company for a blocked toilet?

If only your toilet or property is affected, the issue is usually more likely to be within the property drainage. If neighbours are affected, outside chambers are overflowing beyond your boundary, or you suspect a shared or public sewer issue, the local water or sewerage company may need to be contacted.

How can I get a clearer blocked toilet price?

Explain whether the toilet is draining slowly or completely blocked, whether water is rising, whether anything may have been flushed, whether other drains are affected, and whether the same toilet has blocked before.
