Pitch fibre pipes are no longer manufactured, with the majority of drain pipes today being made using plastic. During the second half of the 20th century pitch fibre piping became a popular, more affordable, lightweight alternative to the heavier, more traditional clay pipes.
Pitch fibre pipes have an estimated lifespan of about 40 years, so many are no falling into disrepair. Pitch fibre pipes are made of wood cellulose impregnated with inert coal tar pitch. Asbestos was often added to strengthen the pipes. Generally speaking, any asbestos present is bound within the coal tar pitch, meaning that it doesn’t pose any health hazards as long as it is left alone. Unfortunately, pitch fibre is more prone to breakage than pipes made from other materials, so in the long term replacing pitch fibre pipes is the best course of action.
Due to its short lifespan, pitch fibre is often found to have blistered and deformed, causing the diameter of the run to decrease and drain blockages to occur. Despite pitch fibre pipes no longer being produced, they can still be successfully repaired and made fully functional once again.
